“Read This Blog – then, Blackout” – Today, Meet Blackout Theatre

GetPlowedBlog

Blackout Theatre is one of our four non-profits benefiting from the “Beer For A Better Burque” program. Today, learn a little bit about our friends with theatrical talent – and a successful web following:

Blackout Theatre Company is excited to be partnering up with Tractor Brewing Company for their first ever Beer for a Better Burque Program. Blackout Theatre Company started in 2007 as a rag tag group of UNM students interested in exploring theatre through comedy. Blackout began by producing late night sketch comedy shows and continued creating their own original productions outside of the university.

Today, Blackout has expanded into a different kind of theatre. Blackout primarily produces original shows created by the core ensemble. Blackout finds this to be the best way to make art that speaks directly to our community, Albuquerque. Not only does Blackout produce plays, but they have a highly successful YouTube channel, where they regularly premier brand new sketch comedy videos. Blackout’s notable success was the “Shit Burqueños Say” videos which garnered us over one million views and gave Albuquerque its favorite Burqueña, Lynette (Tractor’s Lauren Poole).

Aside from its ground-breaking productions, Blackout Theatre Company runs Wrinkle Writing, an extensive theatre education program that serves hundreds of students a year, improving literacy scores through playwriting. Wrinkle Writing is happening in over twenty classrooms throughout the city of Albuquerque, helping bring arts education back into the schools. Students work with Blackout’s theatre professionals throughout the school year to create their own original productions. In May, Blackout will showcase all of the students’ hard work at the African American Performing Arts Center on the State Fair Grounds.

Blackout Theatre Company is currently working on Quarantine: Collapse, an interactive, zombie apocalypse haunted house. Last year, Blackout burst onto the haunted house scene, creating an experience unlike any other haunted house Albuquerque had ever seen. This year, Blackout has partnered with the Rio Grande Community Farm. Audience members will travel in small groups to seek refuge at our camp, navigate the corn maze and try to survive the zombie apocalypse. Quarantine is Albuquerque’s only experiential haunted house. Complete with an interactive storyline and staffed with Blackout’s professional actors. Quarantine promises to be an experience not to be missed this October.
